Before services like Google alerts came into being people sometimes had go to comparatively great lengths in order to find information relating to a subject of interest. These days we can have information sent to us via services like twitter and Google Alerts, to our smart devices. It is indeed a gift and a curse to be living in this information age, where information overload is rife.

We have to be particularly discerning when it comes to the type of information that we consume as well as it's source, as there are way too many fake news stories out there especially on the internet.

My particular focus is on getting good intelligent, turthfull, and objective information so that I can write interesting and informative articles to make my blog function correctly and helps people to achieve their goals.

This is why I use Google Alerts to keep me in the loop and up to the minute with the latest trends and general news regarding my chosen subjects.

However getting google alerts is one thing, organising that information so that it is not too overwhelming is the thing we should be looking to achieve. So here are a few tips on how to do just that. If you already have a google account you can skip this section.
  1. First off we need to create a google account or sign in if you already have one.
  2. Navigate to the following web address:
  3. Type a search word or phrase for the subject / object / or person you would like information on in the search box at the top of the page. Once you start typing you will notice a button labeled "Create Alert" just below the search box. Below that, you will notice several news feeds related to the words that you just typed in.
  4. After typing in your search words you can go ahead and hit the "Create Alerts" button or click the "Show Options" drop- down menu next to it.
  5. The drop-down menu is simple and gives options on  the frequency, source and where you would like the like the information to be sent.
  6. If you hit the "Create Alerts" button you will be presented with the list of alerts that you've chosen. You can then edit the same options by click on the pencil icon inline with your alert.
  7. Follow these steps for every alert that you would like to set up, and make a note of each of the search phrases you've used for your alerts - i.e "Music Production" as this will be need later in the process.

Ok so now that's done, you can close that tab and navigate to your email service where the organisation of the information comes into play. Do not underestimate this stage as the information that you have singed up for can come at you fast and me. You can easily fill up your inbox and be sent alerts at rapid speeds. What you want is to have each alert sent to a seperate section within your email account, so that you can manage them without affecting the rest of your email service.
  1. Navigate to your Gmail account & locate your settings - look for the gear icon usually situated at the top right of the screen.
  2. When your there look for and click on the "Settings" text link
  3. A new page will emerge where you should look for and click on, the Labels tab near t  he top left of the screen 
  4. This will bring you to a new screen where you should look down the page to find and click the "Create New Label" button and a pop up box will appear.
  5. There are 2 options here "Label Name" and the option to associate the new label under an existing one - if already created. Type in the new label name using the same wording you used to create your Google Alert. i.e Music Production. Make associations if you want to, then hit the "Create" button. 
  6. You will then see the new label added to the labels section and more importantly it will also appear on the right hand column of the main email window on your email account just under the Inbox" and "Sent Mail area.
  7. Now comes the filtering - In settings area, look for and click on the "Filters and blocked addresses" tab.
  8. You will then need to find and click on the "Create New Filter" text link - currently located in the centre of the screen about half way down.   
  9. A pop up box will appear. In the subject field text area you will need to insert the wording that you used for the Google Alerts service i.e Music Production.
  10. At the bottom right corner of this box click on the text link called "Create filter with this search »"
  11. The box will present new options. look for  "Apply the label" and choose the label you created from the drop down list to the right of the text.
  12. After that click "Create Filter"

And there you have it, it's all don! According to    the setting that you have used in your Google Alerts account you will simply click on the appropriate Label in your email service and you will see all the news feeds that have come through to your email address neatly organised for our consumption.
